McElroy/Greeran Tournament

13th Jun 2018

McElroy/Greeran Tournament takes place at

St. Mary’s Primary School, Dechomet.

With our fantastic new pitch and lovely sunny weather St. Mary’s Primary School, Dechomet, hosted our first ever inter-schools football tournament on Monday 11th June past. To have eight local schools competing on a home pitch was a dream come true. The pitch was constructed in memory of treasured pupil, Stephen McElroy, who passed away in March 2015.

The participating eight teams were St. Mary’s PS Dechomet x 2, St. Matthew’s PS Magheramayo, St. Mary’s PS Rathfriland, St. Paul’s PS Cabra, St. Michael’s PS Finnis, St Colman's Annaclone and St. Patrick’s PS Drumgreenagh.

The teams were organised into 2 groups of 4. The runners up from each group ie. St. Michael’s Finnis and St. Mary’s Rathfriland played in a final for the Susan Greeran Cup while the winners of each group ie. St. Patrick’s Barnmeen and St. Mary’s Dechomet played in the final of the McElroy Cup.

The group stages saw some fantastic games. However, both finals had all spectators on edge as the scoreboard was so close in both matches right to the final whistle. In the end St. Michael’s Finnis won The Susan Greeran Cup while The Stephen McElroy Cup remained on home soil.

Pictured also is our own school captain receiving The Stephen McElroy Cup from Paul and Pattie McElroy together with Paul Greeran and team members.

The school would like to thank Gerard McAnulty who refereed all the games and who also organised a series of side events between matches. A big thankyou also to all the helpers who provided tea/sandwiches, etc. and refreshments for the children.
